Amazing discovery coming from the official Sims 3 forum. Apparently if you tinker around with the special fog machine using the in-game cheats, you can make it snow and rain! Here’s what ‘ilovesims38‘ had to report:
How to do it.
- Open cheat window enter, Testingcheatsenabled on.
- Then Buydebug.
- Go under misc.
- There will be a ball called fog emitter.
- buy it.
- hold down Shift+ctrl and click it.
- you will have three options
- Make sure visual effects is activated.
- then click the visual effect button enter what you want. (list of commands below.)
- then add “ability to add trigger”.

Someone of MATY discovered this and then it spread, I don’t think it’s really fair to give him all the credit, either way when I first read this I was very surprised! This is HUGE, rain and snow are really nothing to the other things you can do which will be more helpful in building
This is brilliant! It’s only a matter of time when we have weather that actually affects the game via moodlets. Remember in the very first Sims 3 article from March/April 2008 that it mentioned that Sims could get a negative moodlet for being soaked in the rain. It’s just that EA wanted to sell weather separately in an EP.

That looks neat, but do the ground fill up with snow like Sims 2? It looks like it is a teaser for the next expansion, which I am wanting to get along with Pets expansion.
Michael, no, it doesn’t. According to the forum posts, it’s just really a hidden fx, most likely meaning that there will be an EP that includes weather. For now, it just looks like it is snowing or raining but it has no effect in the game (moodlets, temperature, etc.). It’s good for stories and videos, that’s it. But at least we now know for sure that there will be weather in the future. And the snowflakes are very pretty! They look much better than in Sims 2 because they are shaped like actual snowflakes. Go to that forum thread to see more screen shots and videos.
Thanks, Frankie! Yeah, I checked it out, and agreed that snowflakes look so much better and neat. They are so detailed like actual snowflakes. Yeah, i remember the article mentioned about getting soaked in rain and getting a negative moodlet from it. I don’t know why it is not included in the base game, when it first mentioned, but held it for a new expansion instead.
Hope that there are many things to do for Weather expansion, which I am sure there are.

You should make a note that to enable the ffects, you must be in Buy Mode.
Do u type in buydebug and will a window with a list including miscellaneous pop up?
@Paige, you have to be in buy mode to see it. Hold down ctrl and shift, then you can click it.
i couldent find the fog thing i looked like 3 times i have sims3 high end loft stuff, will it work for that?
this is so stupid, the codes won’t download for me can you just tell me what they are or something ugh.

How do i make the weather go outside? When I use it, it makes it snow indoors!
I tried all these things but when I came to step 9 there isn’t any list of effects, it only asks me to give a name to the effect. I tries the “ability to add trigger” name but still doesn’t work. it only produces fog, not snow…
any ideas???

On the new sims 3 expansion pack that is about to come out which is called “the sims 3 outdoor living” I read that It was meant to make the weather change and aparently you can have pets is this true? thanks guys 🙂 xx

Do you have to play ambition to apply the snow/rain and that??..
Open buy mode, then open the bar where you write the cheats, and type in ”testingcheatsenabled true” and press enter. Then open it again and now write ”buydebug” and it would open the buydebug menu. If it doesnt then search for the question mark in buy mode category. When you find it, there should be a category called misc. open it and scroll down and search for the fog emitter. when you find it place it, hold Shift+ctrl and click on it. and then continue this from

Does it do this automatically after you put it in and does it stop and not one day rain and the next snow and then the next day rain etc. or is it more like one day sunshine next rain then the next rain then sunshine then snow then rain etc.?
