A portion of a review by Metro.co.uk on The Sims 3 Ambitions:

The lack of variety isn’t really a problem in gameplay terms since you can just switch jobs (or turn your sim into a mooching slacker for a bit) but in terms of value for money there is certainly an issue. Especially as the other extras in the expansion don’t really add up to much – just some new character traits and lifetime wishes, plus a couple of new hobbies.

The new inventing and sculpting hobbies are fun novelties but they don’t change the game in the way the professions do and we’d much rather have seen them left out and had a few more job types instead.

And that’s the real issue here: there’s nothing wrong in what it offers but instead the amount you’re expected to pay for it. The professions are a great idea and add a welcome new angle to the game but either there needed to be a lot more or the expansion itself needed to be a lot cheaper.
