I’ve been reading over the official Sims 2 BBS this past week encountering many threads about custom content for The Sims 3. I’m speaking about TRUE custom content – new meshes, patterns, objects, skins, modifications, etc. and not changing the color of various items inside the game. Simmers were in a state of confusion as supposedly EA digitally signed the package files for the game, thus making any modifications could lead to potentially legal issues. But then again that’s not going to stop the ones who would like to get the most from their game!
The bad thing about this…is that they are using a pirated copy to test these mods which really is an old version. So I wouldn’t bother with any just yet until the game hits shelves – they’ll need the time to make changes to the mods once the retail game is released. None the less, it’s still an interesting read. Check out the links to the activity in the community:

Special shoutout to Hiki of Sims 3 Nieuws for mentioning the links!
I never doubted for a second that our modders/hackers would be on top of this, regardless of obstacles 🙂 I want to go on record as having argued that point against the naysayers since the first rumors about “no CC” started going around!
Worth noting though that EA DID apparently put some (ineffective) barriers up this time though. Hope that doesn’t predict policy towards the modders and mod sites.
The latest leaked version of TS3 is not an old version. It’s the exact same version which will hit selves on the fourth. I do not foresee much content change between the leaked version and the retail version. The same thing happened with TS2. Everyone claimed that the leaked version was old, but when the thing hit shelves, the version numbers for every bit of it, save for the patching program, were the same. I’m sure this will be true for this version as well.
EA’s futile attempts to “stop” modding of their products is laughable at best. These attempts are nothing more than a liability shield for the company so they can say they are combating the evil practice of people who are getting the best out of their product and adding content they never could have imagined.
And the leaked version is simply a marketing ploy used by the company many times. This allows the hacks and mods to hit the net prior to the game. This develops a community that otherwise wouldn’t exist prior to its launch. It’s basically a beta test because only the true players\pirates will get it and it’ll start-off the community early.
A game is only as good as its best mod.
