If you attended the Simmers Meetup 2015, then you were probably pretty envious of anyone who won one of these bad boys! The Steelseries APEX M800 is a customisable mechanical gaming keyboard which is fantastic for both work and play on your computer.
Created by Steelseries, who created the Sims 4 gaming peripherals, the Apex M800 is actually the fastest mechanical keyboard at the time of it’s production. I have used an Apple keyboard since 2013 and initially adjusting to a large keyboard was strange and uncomfortable, but now I have grown to love it and use it with my iMac and PC. I believe it makes typing more comfortable and is fantastic when playing a variety of games whether it’s The Sims 4 or another favourite.
The whole keyboard actually illuminates which makes it an eye-catching addition to your desk and means you can change all of the colours. Make it Simtastic by changing the keyboard to a plumbob colour of green or let it cycle between a variety of different colours when it’s inactive. As you type, the keys you tap will briefly change to a light blue which is pretty cool but just make sure no one is looking when you’re typing in your password!
When typing, the keyboard does make a noticeable tapping sound which I quite like when I’m using any keyboard. However, this is probably down to personal preference and some people may find it annoying especially when they’re typing quickly or playing a keyboard-intensive game.
The keyboard actually requires two free USB ports, which could be a bit of an inconvenience, however to make up for this two USB’s are found at the top of the keyboard so you’re technically losing no USB ports by using this keyboard and it makes things easier to plug in.
You can also download the Steelseries Engine from Steelseries.com which allows you to go deeper with keyboard customisation and set pre-defined cycles, configure particular keys to perform certain functions and more. This works on both Mac and PC.
Overall, I love the Steelseries Apex M800 mechanical keyboard. It makes typing and playing games a breeze, it’s easy to customise and configure keys to perform particular functions and is a huge upgrade for me compared to my iMac keyboard.
