Maybe with EA’s permission someone else could run a Sims 2 fan site that would function just like the original Sims 2 but without the store. I haven’t played the Sims 2 much, and I couldn’t do that even if I wanted to, but maybe someone else could.

i feel it’s gone forever. First the Sims 2 Store and now the site. Another thing is they removed the banner/link for the Sims 2 at the bottom of thesims3.com not long after the sims2.com started showing that message.
I think they are hoping if they leave it off for so long, people will stop visiting the site.
Not sure how long i will have this up, but i backed up there site with HTTrack and:

Just for the record the sites shut down it was said in an EA service announcement along with Sims 2 for PC/Mac,Sims Carnival,Sims Social,Simcity Social,Sims 3 Pets for Xbox 360 and PS3,and every other social Sims game,
