The game, though, raises some small complaints based upon what was shown at the demonstration at the 2011 E3 Expo. While there are a number of different breeds of dogs and cats (the horses were not show, only mentioned) — not all breeds are included in the game. Sure, there are probably more breeds of each than the programmers wanted to include, but even common and popular breeds like Pit Bulls are absent. Also, real life pets these days are no longer commonly restricted to just the three genus that are included in the game. Pet lovers that would like to adopt ferrets, chinchillas, rabbits, and others are being left out of the fold.
article here (thanks SimsVIP!)
Why do I get the feeling that this interviewer is not a Sims player? So what if a particular breed is not included, if they only watched that video alone they would know you could create one with CAP.
Plus I’d rather have a few detailed Pets than lots of superficial pets. Already it seems there is more in this version than TS2’s.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve limited the breeds so that they can “monetise” them. That tends to be the clumsy sort of thing they’d do. Taking players’ ability to make entire breeds themselves easily away (ie. making the game dramatically less creative and good) so that they can put the likes of pit bulls in the store.
*sigh* I wish Mojang could do a hostile takeover of The Sims 3 team.
Good on ABC News for pointing out the thing some of us had been suspecting – That this EP is basically another empty, cynical cash grab by EA.
From the press releases to the first impressions given by various fan sites at E3, it was clear that there’s very little content being served up once again, and that this EP will basically become little more than a glorified Stuff Pack with a premium price tag.
Also, I sort of agree with Kiwi_tea, though Mojang wouldn’t need to make a hostile takeover of the TS3 team – Notch has plenty of good ideas of his own and a team that gives a shit about their fanbase. Bring on the Sims/Sim City hybrid!
No pit bulls? If I were a pit bull owner I’d be pissed! It is a popular dog breed! If you’re adding 100 breeds, why not add the most popular first and then add on the others? Plus, sucks that there won’t be rabbits and other exotic pets!
Theblackscorpion, I suspect you haven’t been paying attention to the past behaviour of EA or the quality and breadth of the past few EPs and SPs.
If you have, I suspect you might just have uniquely low standards. Good for you.
But I want well-rounded quality and genuine engagement.
My point being it is not too early to make critical judgement based on promotional statements, informed by EA’s record to date.
I say have the fans boycott it, I’m tired of the expansion packs getting less and less material, Generations might as well have been a stuff pack, we need to not buy this until they add more features (and my guess as to why pit bulls got left out is that they have a bad reputation, even though they are popular and kind dogs, they are usually seen as a violent breed)
I personally hate pets is due to this….”Best game-selling”….<—-that is the main point EA can go lazy with it.
I guarantee that their ep item gifts would be….like1?(since they keep getting less) Or maybe NONE(since it's SO special in their mind)
P.S @theblackscorpion, I really wish I could be like you, not like me a negative freak, but I just can't…..with EA:The Sims Studio ONLY.
For me, it will be worth it.
Sims 2 Pets + horses + user control + better customization = huge ep. And there’s no stuff pack that has so much new items and interactions. Generations and Pets are not just glorified stuff packs.
The game doesn’t come out for what another 4 months? I suspect that they’re probably still working on breeds. Considering that this article didn’t contain basically anything (and that we’ve heard very little about this EP in general) I think you’re jumping on the hate train too soon.
I don’t get the fuss about leaving out a couple breeds, we’ve seen the new CAP and it looks very involved, why can’t you create the breed yourself?
Oh and I happen to really like Generations and think it adds a lot to my gameplay, so speak for yourself. By “the quality and breadth of the last several EPs and SPs” I would guess that it would involve multiple EPs? LN was a great EP that undeniably added a lot, SPs have always been terribly overpriced without much content, personally OLS is my favorite SP.

I sure hope we can. In the first five or six promotional events they seemed to specifically avoid talking about changing the pet using sliders, and stuck firmly to “You can change it’s coat!” which gave me a sinking feeling.
Now, in recent spots, they’ve mentioned altering the pet’s physicality more, which is a very good sign.
I love Generations, but I don’t think it’s worth the price tag at all. I had a good long look over the GameplayData file and it’s really doesn’t add as much as people think. It’s much less robust than WA, for example, in the interactions it adds.
Personally I thought LN was quite sparse, considering the price tag, and in terms of it’s construction, it was very sloppy. Have you actually looked at Bridgeport in CAW? It’s a mess! Roads built on top of roads. Roads not connected at intersections. The infamous routing paint bug. It’s very, very sub-par.
Not to mention – the games are only remotely stable in the long term if you use third-party mods.
That strikes me as fairly poor form in any product.
nobody has reviewed the expansion yet, only the console versions. all this negativity towards the expansion is unnecessary until we actually get a review of the expansion and not the console version. also, “over 100 breeds of cats and dogs”, we don’t know what breeds are included or left out. In a few months when euro sites get hands-on with the Pets expansion we’ll know what it does and does not have. still too early to judge the expansion.
when they say 100 pets, they don’t mean 100 of each pet. They mean a combined total of 100 between the cats and dogs. So in reality there is probably more cats than dogs because all cats have similar shape
That would be amazing
I think there not including greyhounds either! Some posted the dog breeds on YouTube. Hopefully I missed it but later on I was the thinking and didn’t remember hearing it. I’m sure some talented people will create PittBulls!
