Is this EA’s equivalent to the Saturday Night Live’s spoof D*ck in a Box? I can’t say for sure, but if they do go this route, I do believe we’re being shafted – big time! SimTimes found a listing on ABC Software for The Sims 3 Barnacle Bay Retail Version. According to the product description, all we’re going to get is a piece of paper in the box with a code to redeem the items from the Sims 3 Store.
So if this is indeed true….why even bother putting this out in retail stores? Are they really going to waste all of those resources for a paper and a box – they can’t even give us a CD? What about those that don’t play the game on computers with active internet connections all the time? I know we can always download them and save them to a thumbdrive. But what’s the point, here?!?
Next thing you know, they’re going to sell expansions in which you’ll get the box and piece of paper to download it from the EA store….
If they do, then I’m done with this game. My internet company sucks, it’s so slow. And they wonder why so many of us have gone over to the Dark Side to get our Sims stuff. Duh!!
They only keep doing this sort of rip because people keep falling for it!!
Spread the word, stop buying store stuff!! (including if it’s in retail like this).
The only thing that will send them message in a way they will heed is to hit them in the wallet…
LOL, I got like….2500 simpoints…just sitting there not doing anything, had them since the base game. 😛
Pardon for my lanugageu, but EA is going to FUCK UP reaaal good soon.. that they’re gonna regeret it REALL bad!
It’s really stupid for 20$ just a code. No thanks.
They’ve been doing this for a while with console DLC, like Episodes From Liberty City and Fallout: Mothership Zeta. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if this, and even future packs, were nothing but codes in a box. The power of something on a store shelf is still very big to a certain market, and until that market moves over to digital completely, there will still be a reason to “waste” money on packaging. But yeah, from the standpoint of a consumer like myself, it’s friggin’ pointless.
They already do this? Wow.
If Sims 3 hits Steam I’m leaving. I have had enough grief with Civilization V – Steam’s offline mode doesn’t work if you are not connected to the internet. And to fix this problem, you have to be connected to the internet….
Not to mention it should be spelt ‘Civilisation’ 😉
(I’m British….)
Actually, you already get a piece of paper (the manual, with serial number) with which you can download the digital version of the EPs and SPs. You just have to redeem the code in EA’s Download Manager, prior to installing/registering the pack.
The good thing is that you actually also get the game on a disc with EPs/SPs 🙂
I guess you are done playing The Sims forever then… The Sims 3, and all of its expansions and stuff packs are available on Steam.
LOL. What the flying focaccia is this? If you pay me $20 I’ll download Barnacle Bay for you, put it on a disc, and send it to all you suckers! Available while supplies last.
i still like having a physical copy too. what if their servers and backups fail? there goes your game if you have to reinstall since most download managers don’t save the install files by default.
Oh, I meant if Steam is the ONLY way of getting the Sims. I know it is already on Sims – sorry for being unclear.
Did anyone by the way knew that the name Barnacle Bay comes from the Simsons?

I wonder how long it’ll be before EA announces that all Custom Content is actually their intellectual property and release a Stuff Pack with everyone’s items in! I can imagine them doing it…
Or “The Sims 3: Custom Content Pack” With blender, a user made plugin, the TSR Workshop and and a load of user made textures… all for just £29.99.
Give them a chance. Some idiot will buy it and they know it!
Wait, so basically they want people to pay $20 for a voucher to download something that they can download for $16.50 if they get it directly from the store? Does it have extra content or something? Or are they really ripping people off? I mean, Barnacle Bay was already a ripoff at $16.50.
They’ve done that before. One or two of the EPs for The Sims (1) featured content from the modding community, including clothing with no credit given. PC Format at the time criticised EAxis for doing it and charging the punter £20 for content they could pick up for free from the fansites!
I would buy a world.maybe not bb.but i mean it would have to be on a disc, coz yeah i dont have internet to download it.. here in the less developed parts we need discs. thats y i hate the store.
i cant belive it why just anybody give me a code because im not paying 20 dollars for a code that is not a deal i will wait til it go to youtube and they give the code for free in 2weeks
I know its stpid cause I have barniclebay and it wont FUDGIN WORK cause they didnt give me the entire passcode! ohwell. DONT BUY IT!!!!!!
Oh and by the way, its 40 bucks
At first i was like ‘What the heck?’ because that is really weird. But I don’t really care because I’m buying it with simpoints instead of the code so yeah.
