Dutch fans, Amsterdam University Press reported on a book discussing the studies of technical and physical characteristics on modding in The Sims. The following is taken from their website:
Tanja Sihvonen: Players Unleashed! – Modding The Sims and the Culture of Gaming
Players Unleashed! investigates what happens when computer code, ideologies, and modding games come together in the best-selling computer game of all time, The Sims. Tanja Sihvonen addresses the technical and physical characteristics of the Sim mods – which are regarded as manifestations of participatory culture – and shows cultural context in which they arise.
This book focuses on various player activities to create content and changing the source code. Players Unleashed! enhances understanding of the modding and makes clear that these activities may be inseparable from the context in which the players operate.
Reviews:
Players Unleashed is a thought provoking and well-argued reconstruction of the history of digital games and the role of player modifications to such artifacts. Focusing on the wide-ranging universe of mods for the best selling game The Sims, Sihvonen presents a cogent and persuasive argument for the importance of such activities, and in doing so helps us understand the vital role that players have claimed in the development and evolution of digital games.
