Controls in general, do work very well. I think I still prefer my mouse, but you rarely run into stumbling blocks, which is a pleasant surprise. The select button will pull up the menu that allows you to quickly access the town map, build/buy mode, and karma mode, as well as allowing you to return to live mode (if necessary). In live mode, all your key details are located off to one side, and you can easily switch between them, as well as between your different household members. You have a “cursor” that appears as a glowing circle of light, and whenever you select something it will give you the option of which item (or Sim) you mean, meaning you don’t have to worry about precision. This system works nicely, since leaving your cursor on your Sim will force the camera to follow him or her, and using R3 or L3 will either center the camera on your active Sim or on the cursor. Pressing down on the D-pad will pause, but you can also use the circle button, which is handy if you are a control freak like me and like to queue up a lot of tasks for your Sims without allowing them to do stupid stuff in between. Free will, psh. Along these lines, the game does give you the ability to set how much free will you want your Sims to have, as well as how long you want their lives to be. The one thing that did irk me is that even on super speed, in-game time seemed to pass relatively slow. You know, you might want to have something else to do while your Sims sleep through the night, as it definitely takes longer than it should.
