I’m not much for PC hack-and-slash games (though I did really enjoy the Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance console series), so the fact that I was able to get into the groove of mouse-and-keyboard combat rather quickly shows how accessible Darkspore’s basic gameplay is. However, what I’ve seen is just a vertical slice of what the final product will present, and I’m curious to see how the game will handle larger battles and, perhaps most importantly, the mixing of Spore’s character customization with Darkspore’s gloomier style with rigid combat classes. The next few months will be critical for Darkspore, but I have confidence that Maxis will be able to meet the lofty promises they’ve made for the game.
