I miss The Sims. No, really, I do. It was such a blast to play. The game opened up many doors for me – programming, 3D modeling, how to use a paint program…hence the main reason why I loved it. Thankfully I am not alone. In her newest Sim article, VRevis reached out to long time players in the community to get their take from the game that hit shelves 10 years ago. Here’s a snippet of what was said:
Twoftmama: “My nephew bought the game, played it about 2 weeks and gave up. When he came to stay with us for the summer, he brought his computer and games with him. Bored one night, I was looking through his games and saw it. I asked if I could try it and he said ‘yeah, but it sucks.’. Six hours later I was still playing. I’ve been hooked ever since. The thing I remember most is how hard it was to keep their motives up before I discovered mods. [My nephew] is in college now, and when he came to visit in April, he couldn’t believe I was still playing with sims.
The babies were cute, dressed in green, I think and had arms and legs, unlike in TS3. When they cried this red/orange zig zaggy thing came out of the cradle, which was green.”
zephyrzodiac: You had to Feed – Play – Sing – Feed – Play – Sing with the baby if you wanted your sim to be able to get some uninterrupted sleep! Miss one out, and the crying would start all over again.
miros1: “I had a different variant of the baby interaction. I think it was Play – Play – Feed – Feed – Sing – Sing. That way the baby didn’t barf on the parent.
Remember when raising a baby to childhood without one or both parents getting fired was good for bragging rights on the Yahoo! egroups?”
(author): “Sims were so cranky when they woke up! Even when their energy was full, they’d wake up stomping their feet and yelling!”
miros1: “I lost a baby to the social worker that way… stupid Sim was supposed to sleep in the recliner in case the baby woke up, but she sneaked into the bedroom. By the time I woke her up and she finished her tantrum, the Social Worker was on the lot.
When Bob (Newbie) was supposed to be taking care of the baby (I figured out the trick was to alternate the parents’ days off) and Michael Bachelor came to visit, no one was paying any attention to the baby, so Bonehilda picked her up and fed her!
miros1 (cont’d): Bonehilda was the buyable skeleton maid from Makin’ Magic who ‘lived’ in an upright coffin when not working. I always wondered if you could trash the house badly enough to keep her out of the coffin to take care of the baby while the parents were working.
I installed The Sims again recently. It’s such a wonderful game, so full of interactions. If only it was in 3D…
I’m not going to lie… I had a blast playing the original and I had purchased all the EP’s for improved gameplay. However, when I had experienced Sims 2 and had tried to go back to the original, I had had a tough time because you get spoiled very easily with the improved gameplay and graphics. It’s the same with Sims 3. I’ll always cherish each game, but as the game improves and moves on, so does the quality (I just wish all the bugs were fixed). The original still makes for a cherished memory, though, and I do get nostalgic. It did, after all, make way for the newer games. 🙂
