Sheesh…wake up in the morning only to find out there is some new involvement brewing with TSR and the TSR Must be Destroyed website. Apparently there is a leaked document that surfaced which contains 615 people’s real information – their full names and email. I think this information was posted about those who pirate/share TSR content. TSR fires back with a reply though, stating the following:
False accusations against TSR
Some of you may have seen yet more false accusations made against TSR on another so called community site claiming that our member database containing personal names and addresses has been leaked. We would like to assure all member of TSR that this list of usernames has not come from TSR. Many of the usernames published do not even exist in our database, and never have. For the usernames that do exist, in some cases we have more info than they claim, and in others, less.
This list is clearly not a list of TSR users. This latest folly only demonstrates further that the information posted on that site about TSR is false, dreamt up in an underhanded attempt to try and discredit our community. Because we are absolutely confident that we can prove this to be farce we have instructed a law firm to press for full legal recompense for libel.
If you have any concerns we would urge you to read our Privacy Policy which we believe demonstrates that we take our members’ privacy very seriously.
Update: Some comments posted by users on that site who are listed, state that they never gave TSR that info, or that the username is actually used on another Sims site and not on TSR.
After digging a little deeper, the information appears to be from the online petition “An open letter to EA Games: Why we will not be supporting you“. It is said by TSR Must Be Destroyed that it was hacked while at 615 signatures. So yeah…Let me make it clear – if you have any personal information that you want to keep only to yourself, be careful with what you post as it may end up in the wrong hands.
I think I’ll just watch this from the sidelines this time instead of actively getting involved. If any more details break – from both sides – I’ll post. I don’t have the answers on what really happened, but I do think it’s foolish to pay for downloads – especially if it is made by free tools. And yeah, this is coming from someone who used to work on the 8th Deadly Sim paysite. I saw the errors of my way.
i knew kitty pirates were evil……
Those 600-some folks aren’t pirates, they merely signed an anti-paysite petition expecting their personal info to only be seen by EA – not TSR.
That petition was posted at the official site. There may be quite a few persons of minor age who signed it, and TSR somehow has that list and could care less who they give it to. How or why they have it doesn’t even really matter.
EA should put some distance between itself and TSR, the blowback isn’t doing it any favors.
The people who signed that petition were showing their displeasure for EAs current business practices, not filesharing. They were not pirates, just unhappy simmers. TSR just made a whole group of new enemies by falsely accusing 600+ people and posting their personal information.
Aw, that kitten is too adorable! Anmyhow, wow, if this true, then this really bites. Let’s see how this mess turns out. And Jud, aw, it’s not like you were greedy or anything for having worked at a paysite. I respect those who used to be pay and then start to support the free sites. Because you are absolutely right, there is no reason to charge for CC. I hate when paysites show great pictures of CC and then in game some of that CC look horrible. That, to me, is false advertising. At least with free CC, you can just delete it without feeling as though you wasted money.
“nooo kittehhh you can’t have mah cheezy pooooofsss”
It is cute, isn’t it? 😉
