The Spore Facebook page posted an interesting YouTube video of a short interactive online demonstration of a Spore 3D viewer. Using a free program called Wild Pockets, the creator – Nikkio – implemented a few creatures inside a test application which will let you browse creatures (currently 7) in 3D. Amazing idea that I’d love to see Maxis implement on their site but I’m sure it’ll be a resource hog for their servers if they do.
Actually, there are minimal resource issues with showing Spore creatures on any website. Wild Pockets allows you to embed the real time 3D models on just about any website (including this one!) by using an embed tag similar to youtube. The tag points back at the http://www.wildpockets.com servers and delivers the 3D experience on the web page that hosts the embed tag. That means very little resource requirements for your website.
Here’s the embed tag for the above video clip should anyone want to show the actual 3D models on their website:
And here’s the URL if you just want to play with the 3D models: http://www.wildpockets.com/view/pocket=Nikkio%2FSpore%20Demo%20Pocket
You can use IE and FF on WIndows for now. Mac will be available in about 60 days.
Thanks David, as soon as I get my computer back up and running, I’ll re-visit your comment and check your links out again 🙂
Apparently this site strips out iframe references and it doesn’t appear in my above message!
If you go to this page http://www.wildpockets.com/view/pocket=Nikkio%2FSpore%20Demo%20Pocket you can get the embed link right below the 3D model viewing window.
