The Sims 3 was finally upgraded from its 32-bit, Windows-emulated mess of a Mac port to a native, 64-bit, metal-supporting application earlier in 2022.

This was fantastic news for Mac users as Apple stopped supporting 32-bit Mac apps, which meant many players were unable to play The Sims 3 for a long time! Mac users are particularly used to various issues playing the game, and this new version is no exception.

Many people are experiencing an audio cracking problem when playing the game – myself included with my MacBook Air M1. This can get pretty frustrating very quickly but, fortunately, we have a solution for you thanks to a user on Reddit.

Follow the steps below to fix audio crackling on The Sims 3 (64-bit and Metal) on Mac.

Fix Audio Crackling for The Sims 3 on Mac

  1. Open Launchpad on your Mac
  2. Search for “Audio Midi Setup” and open this application
    Audio Midi Setup
  3. Click the drop down menu beside “Format”
  4. Select “96,000 Hz” from the drop down
    Audio Midi Setup
  5. Close the application and launch The Sims 3!

This should successfully stop the audio from crackling as much when playing The Sims 3 on your Mac. There may be times where you do get the occasional crackle, but it’ll be much less distracting now.

Happy Simming!
