Maxis held a press event yesterday to show off the Creature Creator, and it appears to work as advertised. The tools are relatively fool-proof; you’ll have to go out of your way to make a Spore creature that looks completely malformed. By giving you minute control of even the most granular bits (like individual vertebra), you can finely tune your creature’s morphology, creating everything from, say, an amorphous puddle of goo with eyestalks and crab claws, to a chitin-plated giraffe with manta ray wings and raptor claws. All around me at yesterday’s event were toucan-beaked Furbies, Pokemon rejects, and, as one colleague pointed out, something that would surely annoy a spoiler-averse moviegoer who’d yet to watch Cloverfield.
