At this point, they kind of deserve it. If I had any kind of power, I would have split the company years ago… They don’t have enough competition on their level to justify not breaking the company up. It’s true what they say. If they’re too big to fail, they’re too big to exist.
Part of me revels in the fact this company I hate is getting its just desserts and another part dreads what EA is going to do to remedy this situation – namely laying off workers.
EA seriously need to think about what they are making, who they are marketing games for and the quality of the games in terms of polish and buginess

The sims wouldn’t die if that happened. If the company was broken up, someone would have the IP for The Sims. Whether that would make the game better or worse is entirely speculation, but this is a bigger problem than just one franchise. It’s about the fact that EA is like a vacuum that sucks up little companies. At this point it’s only major competition in the PC market is Valve. The thing is EA has been on top so long, they don’t even try anymore. Thus they produce loads of crappy buggy games. Also personally, I would rather watch the Sims games die now, than watch the games get worse and worse. I think it’s appauling that most people cannot enjoy The Sims 3 without mods, because the core of the game is so broken.
This is why they finally started investing more time and money in their cash cow games. They’ve already alienated a huge chuck of their loyal fans and lost out on profits because they put out crap because they assumed “sim” players were stupid and would buy anything.
Unfortunately, the sims and simcity will not be able to create the revenue that they need. They need to stop making crappy buggy games across all genres and consoles. Stop investing in games that don’t sell.
Perhaps this is why we have not heard anything about Sims 4? Either they don’t have the money to develop the game, or they are still working out a way to nickel and dime customers for everything a la Sims Freeplay and Social.
With this in mind, it makes sense that they are continuing to release expansions for Sims 3.
I wonder if they would make money if they got Maxis to make a new expansion for the original Sims or Sims 2? Retrogaming is popular, so I would think some might be interested in this. I know I would be. 🙂
Vstarr – making a Sims 2 expansion would never, ever happen. As much as I loved those games, they are now very outdated and a lot of people have lost / sold / given away their old Sims 2 things since they moved (and then probably abandoned) the Sims 3.
The thing is about EA is that they don’t seem to understand that they can have oppressively friendly PR but that won’t mean anything when their games are so overpriced for what they are worth. Look at Valve – people love Steam because of how affordable the games are – particularly with sales (among other reasons, of course)

^ As if you want the Sims franchise to die.
Prehaps this is why their releasing sims eps and sps closer to one another.
Maybe seasons will get them back on track.
